On the Houthavenkade in Zaandam, a contemporary and sustainable residential district is taking shape where living, meeting and relaxing come together. On 26 February 2020 the municipality of Zaanstad signed the agreement for the development of the Houthavenkade. That marked an important step in transforming this remarkable waterfront location into an attractive new piece of city.

The plan makes room for 710 homes and offers a varied housing mix for different groups of residents. From social rental and mid-market homes to private-sector apartments: Houthavenkade is becoming a district where different residents live alongside and with one another.

A balanced housing mix is a key principle within the development. Of the 710 homes, 30% are social rental, 20% are mid-market rental and 50% are private-sector apartments. This diversity contributes to a lively urban district with room for different stages of life and different housing needs. First-time buyers, families, couples and other city dwellers will find a place here in an attractive setting that is emphatically connected to the water and the city.

At the heart of Houthavenkade lies the watersquare: an attractive waterfront square that forms the social centre of the new district. It will be a place where residents meet, visitors settle in and the relationship with the water can be experienced to the full. Various hospitality venues will find a home around the watersquare. Terraces, liveliness and quality of stay ensure that the square is not merely a place to pass through, but a destination in its own right.
